Deep Work
The valuable stuff happens in long, undisturbed stretches — build them on purpose.
Cal Newport's Deep Work makes one argument that's hard to unhear: the ability to focus without distraction on a demanding task is becoming both rarer and more valuable. A day of fragmented half-attention produces motion; ninety undisturbed minutes produce the thing you're actually proud of.
Deep work doesn't happen by wishing. It happens when three things line up: a protected block of time, a brain at the right energy, and an environment that can't interrupt you. Fokus has a lever for each.
How to practice it in Fokus
Mark the demanding work
Give your hardest tasks an extensive energy level (*extensive in Spotlight). That's the scheduler's signal that this task deserves prime time, not the post-lunch fog.
Tell Fokus when your prime time is
Set peak hours in AI Scheduling settings — the scheduler routes extensive work into them automatically. Your deep work block now builds itself, every day.
Seal the room
When the block arrives: Immersive Mode (Alt+I) strips the screen to a clock, and Deep Fokus & DND flips your Slack or Teams presence to Do Not Disturb — so the quiet extends beyond your own screen.
Run long, on purpose
Start the timer in Continuous mode — no bells for ninety minutes. Recovery buffers (in scheduling settings) give you honest decompression after.
The quiet supporting cast
- Rest hours keep the scheduler from planning demanding work into your worst hours — protecting depth is also about not scheduling it badly.
- Notification quiet hours (settings) silence the pings without losing them.
- Chunking splits a 6-hour monster into several deep blocks across days, instead of one heroic, doomed afternoon.
- The Morning Briefing tells you where today's deep block sits — walk into it prepared instead of discovering it.
Depth is a budget
Most people get 2–4 genuinely deep hours a day. Schedule one or two extensive tasks into peak hours and call it a win — six deep-work blocks on a calendar is fiction wearing a plan's clothes.
